Ostrall buying guide
2-person tent buying guide
By Ostrall · Updated October 20, 2026
A "2-person" label says less than it seems: two tents with the same label can differ by a kilo or more in weight and by several centimetres in floor width. Ostrall sorts that out, so you see the tents that fit how you camp, from a campsite in the Lakes to wild camping or a festival weekend.
What Ostrall asks to narrow it down
- Carried on your back, or from the car?
- How many seasons: spring to autumn, or winter?
- Two doors, or one?
- Freestanding, or trekking-pole?
Floor size, not the label
Capacity ratings assume two standard sleeping mats side by side. Many 2-person tents are about 127 to 137 cm wide; at the narrow end, two wide mats overlap and rucksacks live in the porch. Length and peak height vary too.
Minimum weight and packed weight
Makers quote a minimum (trail) weight (inner, flysheet and poles) and a packed weight (everything in the bag). Backpacking tents compete on grams; car-camping tents are often roomier, tougher and cheaper for the same money.
Wind, rain and seasons
- 3-season tents cover spring to autumn: mesh or breathable inners and enough strength for wind and rain.
- 4-season tents are built for winter hills, snow and strong wind: heavier and less airy.
In British weather, a low profile and plenty of guy points matter on exposed pitches, and tunnel tents give a lot of room for their weight but need pegging out to stand.
Single skin, double skin and trekking-pole tents
Double-skin tents (an inner plus a separate waterproof flysheet) handle condensation best, and many pitch flysheet-first so the inner stays dry in rain. Single-skin tents are lighter and quicker to pitch. Trekking-pole tents use walking poles in place of tent poles to save weight.
Festival and pop-up tents
Pop-up tents throw up in seconds and are popular for festivals, but they pack into a large flat disc and are made for campsites and fields rather than carrying.
Hydrostatic head and footprints
Waterproofing is quoted as a hydrostatic head in millimetres: higher resists more water pressure, and groundsheets are usually rated higher than flysheets. Footprints are often sold separately, so Ostrall compares delivered prices for what is actually in the box.
When prices move
Tent prices in the UK often drop at the end of the summer and festival season, on Black Friday and in the Boxing Day and January sales.
Let Ostrall find it
Search in your own words. Ostrall asks only the question your search leaves open, then shows the tents that fit, with today's prices in pounds (VAT included), from stores such as Decathlon, Sports Direct and Argos, and a link straight to each store's product page.
Results come closest match first, then what is in stock, then the cheapest delivered price. No store pays to rank.
